This is a $2.4 million project, <br />with 90% of the project being funded by the state of North Carolina, and 10% by local funds. Of <br />the local match of $240,000, $112,500 has been set aside'in a City capital project fund for this <br />project (see attached ordinance). I respectfully request that the Cabarrus County Board of <br />Commissioners consider making a contribution of $60,000 to $120,000 that could be payable <br />over two fiscal years. <br /> <br />The Kannapolis train station is currently funded under the North Carolina Transportation <br />Improvement Program for 2002-2008 (Project P4010). State funding will be disbursed over a <br />two-year period beginning July 1, 2001. This project will include acquisition of private property, <br />relocation of railroad side trackage that will be lost due to the project, construction of a <br />passenger platform, and a new raikoad depot containing approximately 7,120 gross square feet. <br />This depot will accommodate both short and long term passenger rail service needs for Cabarrus <br />County residents, and will serve as a vital transportation link for tourists and visitors coming to <br />the coumy. <br /> <br />The North Carolina Department of Transportation Rail Division has contracted with Gomes and <br />Staub Architects to provide a site plan and a conceptual drawing for this project. The new depot <br />will be located at the southeast coruer of Main Street (US 29A) and West B Street in Kannapolis <br />(see attached drawing).
