C ABARRUS HEALTH ALLIANCE

MEMORA ND UM

TO:

Cabarrus County Commissioners

DATE: October 4, 2001

FROM: Glenda Keziah, MPH, Child Fatality Prevention Taskforce Chairman

RE:

2000 Child Fatality Prevention Report

The Cabarrus County Child Fatality Prevention Taskforce, enacted by North Carolina Law in
1991 and initiated in Cabarrus County February 1994, is a multidisciplinary group composed of
representatives from local law enforcement agencies, Department of Social Services, Cabarrus
County and Kannapolis City School Systems, Cabarrus Health Alliance, Medical Examiners
Office, Guardian Ad Litem, and Emergency Services. The Taskforce meets quarterly to review
child fatality cases including those relating to abuse and neglect. The Taskforce's purpose is to
prevent future deaths by identifying gaps in the systems, policies, and laws that may contribute
to child fatalities; to make recommendations for improvements and remedies; and to help
implement selected recommendations, in hope that these efforts will improve the lives of all
children in Cabarms County.

Attached are data displays of the number and types of deaths among Cabarrus County children
(age birth through age 17 years) and the Infant Mortality Rates (5 year rates) for Cabarrus
County, which indicates the overall health status of Cabarrus County children. Efforts continue
as the Taskforce members come together to review and make recommendations to the State and
Local organizations for the safety of Cabarrus County children.

I'lt}~[.
