Yvorm¢ Higgins
730 Honeysuckle Lane
Midland, NC 28107
January 03, 2000

Dear Mrs. Carpenter,

I would like to address the problem of all non-certified employees of
Cabarrus County having their salaries frozen for the pass eleven years. I am
one of those employees. I have been employed as a teacher assistant/bus
driver at Bethel Elementary School since August 1988. I love my job
working with children because I do feel I make a difference in their lives. If
it were not for this passion and burning desire that I have, I would have
found a better paying job some time ago. My family and I have made
numerous sacrifices because of the low pay that I make. But once again it is
tbr the love of my job and the great satisfaction that I receive that I have
stayed. As you know we in the classroom are sometimes the only loving,
secure, trusting adult that a lot of these children come in contact with on a
daily basics. But I do think eleven years of frozen pay is enough. I have two
sons in college at ECU (twins) and this is very hard on my husband and me
financially, But we have always instilled in them the importance of a good
education and where there is a will there is a way. I am asking you as an
employee and a voting person of Cabarrus County, would yell please bring
this to the governor's and legislators' attention as soon as possible? I hope
you support us and feel the state governing body should also support us by
unfreezing our wages. I don't believe you would work at a job with no
possible pay advancement or would our governor and our legislators. The
cost of living raises are not very much of an incentive for most employees to
stay and they don't attract the caring employees the children need to be in
contact with everyday.
Thank you for your time in reading my letter and addressing this very
important issue.

Sincerely, ..

' Yvonne I-Iiggins
