Section 1
Geographic and Solid Waste Stream
Evaluation

1.1 Geographic Area
This solid waste management plan covers Cabarrus County and three of its four
incorporated municipalities. A portion of the City of Kannapolis lies in Rowan
County, but municipal solid waste from the entire city limits is disposed of at the
Lowes Motor Speedway (LMS) landfill.

The most recent population figures available from the North Carolina Office of State
Plarming (OSPL) are for the period ending July, 1998. Population estimates for the
Cotmty and each of its municipalities are summarized below in Table 1.

Table 1. Estimated Population, July 1998

MUNICIPALITIES & COUNTY POPULATION
Cabarrus County 120,674
City of Kannapohs 36,550
City of Concord 46,253
Town of Mount Pleasant 1,226
Town of Harrisburg 2,337

Between 1998 and 2000, the OSPL expects the population of Cabarrus County to reach
123,404 which represents a growth rate of 2.3%. Projecting out over the 10 year
planning period (2000-2010), the OSPL expects the County population to rise to
144,126, a 16.8% increase.

1.2 Waste Stream Evaluation
In this plan, residential waste refers to waste generated by households (individual
and multi-family dwellings). The term non-residential refers to waste generated from
commercial, industrial, and institutional activities. Construction and demolition
waste is generated from construction activities and is separated from non-residential
waste in this plan because it will be disposed in a different facility than most non-
residential waste.
