Cabarrus County Public Library
27 Union st. North, Concord, NC 28025
Tel. 704.788.3167 Fax 704.784.3822.

MEMORANDUM

Date: June 7, 2000
To: Blair Bennett, Deputy County Manager
From: Tom Dillard, Library Director
Subject: Proposal by Friends of the Library to donate statuary to Concord Library

The Concord-Cabarrus Friends of the Library, a local non-profit public library support group,
has proposed the donation of an outdoor statue to the Concord Library. This proposal has been
discussed for several months. Steve Little, Director of Cabarrus County Parks and Recreation
Department, the agency that provides planning and care of the Library grounds, has also been
advised of this proposal. The proposed statuary is a limited production bronze piece that consists
of two life-size figures, a young girl and a younger boy, seated back-to-back reading books.
These figures will be seated on a Iow rock or other simple base donated by the Friends group.
The proposed site for the statuary is on library grounds located at the front of the library building
facing North Union St. This statuary will likely be installed at the time of proposed grounds
renovations scheduled for the fall of 2000. The statuary is tasteful and of high quality and is
very appropriate for a public library setting. In addition to promoting reading, a primary mission
of the library, the statuary will enhance the aesthetic environment of downtown Concord. All
installation work involving this donation will be done with the approval of the Cabarrus Parks
and Recreation Director. The Friends will cover all costs of the statuary and installation through
the Margaret McConnell Holt endowment, a fund managed by the Friends. Under the terms of
Mrs. Holt's will, these funds may be used only for the purchase and/or maintenance of art
purchased by the Friends for the Library or for the provision of arts educational programs to the
community.

Please be advised that I do support this proposal. I believe that it will be an asset to both the
library and Cabarrus County. I would request that you provide this information to the County
Manager and to the County Commissioners for their review.

cc: Steve Little, Cabarrus Parks and Recreation Department
