Denartment of Transnortation to Nam~ the Wq~tside Eyl~as~ <br />in the City of Kannanolis as 'KannaDolis Parkway# <br /> <br /> Mr. Marshall presented the request by the Kannapolis City Council that <br />the Board adopt a resolution supporting the renaming of the northern leg of <br />the Westside B~rpass (from Interstate 85 to ~h/ckaseegee Road) to Kannapolis <br />Parkway. He stated the County Planning staff in general supported the <br />resolution but several concerns need to be addressed. These included the <br />short section of US 29-A between US 29 and South Main Street that is <br />currently called Kannapolis Highway, the effective date of the renaming and <br />who will be responsible for the re-addressing of existing residents. The <br />contract between the County and the City of Kannapolis for addressing <br />services expires in July 2001. <br /> <br /> Mr. David Hales, Kannapolis City Manager, reviewed the proposal by the <br />Kannapolis City Council to rename the northern leg of the Westside Bypass as <br />the Kannapolis Parkway. He stated this road will serve as a new gateway <br />entrance into the City of Kannapolis and is a critical component of the <br />City's long-range strategic marketing, ecoaomic development and tourism plan. <br />Mr. Hales explained the final road name decision rests with the Board of <br />Transportation; however, the Department of Transportation has requested <br />resolutions of support from both the City of Concord and Cabarrus County <br />concerning the proposed road name. Me stated the Concord City Council had <br />adopted such a resolution. <br /> <br /> There was discussion by the Board about the proposed road name and <br />concerns that the northern and southern sections of the Westside Bypass will <br />have different names. Members also discussed the several telephone calls <br />they had received from citizens who opposed the name of "Kannapolis Parkway." <br /> <br /> U~ON MOTION of Commissioner Privette, seconded by Chairman Fennel with <br />Commissioner Privette and Chairman Fennel voting for and Commissioner <br />Carpenter voting against, the Board adopted the following Resolution. <br /> <br /> Resolution No. 2000-24 <br /> RESOLUTION <br /> WHEREAS, the Westside Bypass (Project U-2009) will be a major <br />entranceway into the City of Kannapolis; and <br /> WHEREAS, this street is a part of the North Carolina Department of <br />Transportation's street system; <br /> NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that Cabarrus County supports the <br />decision of the Kannapolis City Council in requesting that the North Carolina <br />Department of Transportation rename the northern portion of the Westside <br />Bypass from Interstate 85 to State Road 1616 (~ckaseegee Road) as <br />"Kannapolis Parkway". <br /> Adopted this 19~" day of June, 2000. <br /> <br />ATTEST: <br />/s/ Frankie F. Fennel <br />Chairman, Board of Commissioners <br /> <br />Mandatory Three-Year Update to the Cabarrus County Plsnnino Area Solid Waste <br />Manaoemen~ Plan <br /> <br /> Mr. John Day, Deputy County Manager for Operations, briefly reviewed <br />the mandatory Three-Year Update to the Cabarrus County Planning Area Solid <br />Waste Management Plan. The planning area includes Cabarrus County and the <br />municipalities of Kannapolis, Mount Pleasant and Harrisburg. <br /> <br /> UPON MOTION of Chairman Fennel, seconded by Commissioner Carpenter and <br />unanimously carried, the Board adopted the following Resolution. <br /> <br /> <br />
