4. ROLE OF YOUTH. <br /> <br /> The students in the program help set gaidelines for daily behavior and the consequences <br />involved. The motto of "1 am responsible for my own actions" is emphasized. A student self- <br />evaluation form is reviewed individually with staff members. Students set goals and strategies for <br />improvement and ways to utilize strengths. Youth are involved in team building activities that <br />emphasizes the importance of the individual to the group. Students help plan, organize and lead <br />program and community service activities. Choices of enrichment and recreational activities are <br />supplied each day. Membership in the member-organized 4-H club develops leadership skills and <br />knowledge of the democratic process. <br /> <br />5. OUTCOMES. <br /> <br /> As part of the SOS program, the results of the program are evaluated by Donley & Johnson <br />Educational Evaluation Consultants. The following information is collected: age, gender, days <br />enrolled, referral source, student resides with, English, math, science and social studies grades, <br />math and reading End of Grades Levels, in school suspensions, and out of school suspensions. <br />Program highlights and volunteer involvement ara also reported. <br /> <br /> Written evaluations regarding program activities and program objectives are conducted by <br />students, staff and parents. Evaluations are reviewed by the director and staff for suggestions to <br />improve the program and student outcomes. The results of the findings are also reviewed by the <br />advisory council/board of directors. <br /> <br />6. PARTNERS. <br /> <br /> The program began in December 1996 upon receiving the initial Support Our Students Grant <br />from the North Carolina Department of Human Resources. The North Carolina Office of Juvenile <br />Justice now administers the SOS Grant. <br /> Parents pay a fee based on a sliding scale. Scholarships are awarded based on financial <br />need of students. <br /> Collaboration also exists with the following: <br />NC CoOperative Extension - 4-H curriculum, supervision of coordinator, 'staff training, <br />programming, marketing, volunteers, office facilities and equipment, newsletters, state-wide camp <br />awards for youth. <br />Cabarrus County Schools - facilities, equipment, transpo~fion, volunteers, marketing, <br />referrals, guidance, programming. <br />Cabarrus County Government - office facilities and equipment, administrative support and <br />supervision of finances and personnel, facilities and assistance for programming, supplies, <br />transportation. <br />Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina - reduced cost of food for snacks and supplies, staff <br />training. <br />Cabarrus County Parks and Recreation - facilities, equipment, programming. <br />Cabarrus County KidsPlus - staff training, marketing. <br />Local businesses - merchandise and surplus products for incentives and supplies, discounts, <br />enrichment programming. <br />YMCA and BOY SCOUTS OF AMERICA - personnel, facilities. <br /> <br />3 <br /> <br /> <br />
