CAROLYN EURY

Carolyn Eury will retire at the end of December with 351/2 years of service to Cabarrus
County. She came to work at the Department of Social Services as a Social Worker on
June 23, 1965. She is retiring as the Program Administrator for the Department's
Children's Services Division.

Over the years, Ms. Eury has worked in services to families and children. She became
Supervisor of the Family and Children's Services Unit, on July 22, 1971. While, along
the way, she has provided every service the Department has offered, her specialty has
been foster care and adoption services for children who need loving homes. For many
years Ms. Eury has been the Department's expert in these services. She is known across
the State for her knowledge and expertise. There are people all over Cabarms County
who have been helped directly and significantly by Ms. Eury. You could not count the
children who have had the chance to have homes and to grow up to have happy,
productive lives because of Ms. Eury and her work.

Ms. Eury has come to be recognized as the ultimate professional. I have heard her called
that many times. She has been a role model for all of us at the Department.

Ms. Eury had earned her retirement several years ago. She had planned to retire nearly
two years ago. If she had done that, she could have leR with great pride in her
accomplishments from an outstanding career.

However, I asked Ms. Eury to stay with us for a time because the Department's
Children's Services Division, the group that protects children, helps their families care
them, and finds them homes when they need them, really needed her. It needed her
expertise, leadership, and example. In the summer of 1999, I asked her to take charge of
the Children's Services Division. She was both the only person, and the best person
anywhere for that job.

In spite of the excitement she had then for the plans she had made, in spite of some
serious health problems, and in spite of the hard work this assignment involved, she
agreed to stay. She did this because of her devotion to our children's services program
and her commitment to seeing it be the most excellent program of its kind anywhere.

Tonight, as Ms. Eury prepares for her last days with the Department, she has completed
this assignment. The program she has nurtured and led is recognized in our community
and across the State for the excellent job it dbes in helping children and families. She
places the program now in the hands of the many in the Division who have learned fi'om
her and who will follow her example.

I will always remember and appreciate Ms. Eury, and I know our Department and our
community will as well.
