Introduction <br /> <br />Travel surveys were conducted in the Concord/Kannapolis, North Carolina area between <br />October 1998 and January 1999. The survey results will provide information regarding the <br />potential application(s) for scheduled public transportation services in Cabarrus and Rowan <br />Counties, focusing on the Cabarrus/South Rowan Urban Area. The responses will also <br />provide insights to structure routes that meet identified community needs as well as the <br />characteristics of those services necessary to attract riders. Questionnaires were distributed to <br />Concord and Kannapolis city employees, a private sector employer, residents of public <br />housing, and Department of Aging clients. Of that group, about three of every four <br />respondents are the only adult in the home a reflection of the domestic self-reliance that many <br />elderly people face. This has significant transportation implications both for social service <br />providers and transit agencies--especially as the population ages. Moreover, the ability and <br />confidence to drive can vary greatly within this demographic group. For lonely senior <br />citizens, transit service becomes a way of making social as well as physical connection with <br />their community. Transit planners axe well advised to consider the high rate of growth for this <br />age cohort in planning new services and routes. <br /> <br />Do you have an automobile available to you for any of your transportation needs? <br /> <br />No 97 54 % <br />Yes 78 44 % <br />(~01ank) 4 2 % <br /> <br />It is significant to note that the majority of respondents (54%) do not have an available <br />automobile.
