Cabarrus County Board of Commissioners <br /> <br /> Proclamation for <br />PORNOGRAPHY AWARENESS WEEK <br />October 31 - November 7, 1999 <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, pomography presents a false and distorted image of human sexuality, <br />devoid of love, commitment and responsibility; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, pornography leads men into destructive sexual addictions and contributes <br />to the breakup of marriages; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, much pomography features and promotes sexual violence and other anti- <br />social behavior in an era of increasing sexual violence and an epidemic of sexually transmitted <br />diseases; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, so-called "adult" pornography is commonly used by pedophiles to <br />desensitize children and break down their resistance to sexual acts; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, children are increasingly molesting other children in imitation of what they <br />have seen in pomography; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, there are Federal and state obscenity laws against illegal hardcore <br />pornography to protect public safety, public health, and public morality; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, these obscenity laws are grounded in contemporary community standards <br />of decency; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the United States Supreme Court has held that obscenity is not protected <br />speech under the First Amendment, and has said that the State has a right to "maintain a decent <br />society"; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, Americans throughout this great nation will be participating in <br />Pornography Awareness Week in various ways, including the display of White Ribbons as <br />symbols of community standards of decency and to support the enforcement of obscenity laws. <br /> <br /> NOW, THEREFORE, we, the Cabarrus County Board of Commissioners, do hereby <br />proclaim October 31 through November 7, 1999 as PORNOGRAPHY AWARENESS WEEK <br />in Cabarms County. <br /> <br />This the 18th day of October, 1999. <br /> <br />__Chairman, Board of Commissioners <br /> <br /> <br />
