CABARRUS

ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT

MEMORANDUM

DATE:

TO:

FROM:

CC:

SUBJECT:

October 12, 1999

Cabarrus Board of Commissioners

Maurice D. Ewing, President
Cabarrus Economic DeYelopmeTff~
Southeastern Packaging

Resolution for Southeastern Packaging
Industrial Rail Grant Application

On behalf of Southeastern Packaging I am pleased to report that the announced $11 million
expansion of their existing manufacturing facility in Harrisburg has grown into a $22 million
new facility across Mulberry Road from their existing plant.

Where they previously expected to employ no additional people, they now expect to employ
11 additional employees to join the 121 currently on the payroll.

The crucial component of their decision was rail access to the new site. With substantial
assistance from the NC Department of Transportation, a rail corridor was arranged across
the Mulberry Road right-of-way. And on October 8 the NCDOT Rail Committee awarded a
$121,000 grant to assist with the lead track construction.

Since the project is currently in the County and outside the town limits of Harrisburg,
documentation for the grant requires a resolution of support from the Board of County
Commissioners. We respectfully offer the attached draft for your consideration.

This project requires no additional action on your part.

Thank you in advance for your support of this fine Cabarrus County employer.
