Description of the Program The purpose of this program is to provide a safe, caring, and enriching environment for middle school students after-school and on school holidays. It operates five days a week from the end of the school day until 6:00 p.m. Students are provided homework and tutodng help, physical activities, opportunities to learn new hands-on skills, a place for positive interactions with peers and adults, and nutritious snacks. The program is designed to serve 60-75 students. The program design is based on the Seven Developmental Needs of Young Adolescents, concentrating on the needs of physical activity, self definition, positive social interactions with peers and adults, and meaningful participation. The objectives of the program are to (1) reduce the number of unsupervised students after school, (2) improve academic perfom~ance of the participants, (3) meet the physical, intellectual, emotion, and social needs of the participants, and (4) improve the attitudes and behaviors of the participants. Evaluation of the program includes tracking the number of participants and their grades, absences, and in-school and out-of-school suspensions. Staffing Staff includes a Program Director for all three programs, and a Site Director, three counselors, and three tutors at each school. The Program Director will be.full-time. The Site Directors job will begin one hour before school is out (preparation) and end at 6:00. The Counselors will work from 2:00 - 6:00 daily. The tutors will work 2 hours a week. Contract personnel include the school's media specialist, computer instructor, and a bus ddver..All will be contracted with for approximately 3 hours per week. Special programs (enrichment) people will be contracted with for approximately 5 hours a week. A cledcal assistant/bookkeeper is needed for 20 hours per week. Volunteers to help with all aspects of the program will be sought.
