June 4,1998

Honorable County Commissioners:

I have been a resident of Edgefield Road for twelve years.
During these years we have tolerated the incredible dust during
the summers, the horrible mud in the winters, and the wholes cut
in numerous tires from the "blue stone" spread by the highway
department.
We have been in touch with the highway department every year
to check on the status of the paving of Edgefield. We have been
told that we could not speed up the paving We had to wait
until it was on the "top ten" list to be paved. It is currently
on the list for the year 1998-1999. We were also told that it
could not be blocked from paving unless every landowner on
Edgefield agreed not to pave it.
It is very evident from the petitions that agreement on
either side is a doubtful option. The petitions contain names of
persons who are torn between two opposing sides. There are
spouses who are not in agreement. There are persons who cannot
decide on which side they stand.
Every one of us has what we feel is a compelling reason. In
September I suffered a heart attack and a stroke due to a freak
allergic reaction to a common rheumatoid arthritis medication at
the age of forty-four. After many weeks in Northeast and
Charlotte Rehab Hospitals I came home with my life but I am
visually impaired due to the stroke. I am no longer able to see
well enough to drive. I was able to connect with Mr. Mike Byrd
in the County Office to obtain county van services for the
disabled for some of the many doctor's appointments. My problem
now is I am no longer able to do my much needed walking on the
uneven and rocky terrain of our narrow dirt and gravel road. In
previous years I walked quite frequently before my visual
impairment. I cannot run the risk of falling in a pothole or
slipping in loose gravel. If I could drive I could go to a paved
area to walk and not feel so homebound. It is nice to live "out
in nature", but only if it is accessible.
I know this is a complex issue that has divided the people
of Edgefield Road. There is much unrest between people who
should just be neighbors. If the road paving is postponed, the
unrest and turmoil between neighbors will only continue. I
implore you to let the state department continue with its plans
to pave this small road that has been thirty years on the paving
list.
