04/10/97 <br /> <br />The Excellent Schools Act would also raise the bar for teachers getting a continuing; license, renewing their - <br />license, or getting tenure -- and the ]~'gest pay increases would be tied to teachers' ability to clear those hurd'es. <br />At the same time, the tenure process would 5e shortened to make it easier to fir: a l:OOr teacher. <br /> <br />The most experienced teacher who meets the very highest s~n,~dards - including being Nafion~] Board-cer~qed <br />and geUing a more rigorous master's de~ree -- could earn as much as $$3:0C0 under the bill. <br /> <br />Much of the tLxcellent Schools Act is based on the recent recommendations of the Nmional Commission on <br />Teaching and AzneHca's Future, a national education reform goup chaired by Hunt which sought our ~e best: _ <br />most effective ways to recruit and rem/n the best teachers. "Implementing uhese recomr~enc~tions would ~ut <br />North Carolina at the fo~front of mis/rig standards and performance pay for teache rs," Hunt said. <br /> <br />'Fne Excellent Schools Act would: <br /> <br />* Raise s~ndards for students in reading, writing and math through *.he state Board of Education. <br /> <br />· Require higher standards for teachers entering the profession, including longer internships, a tougher test for <br /> those seeking a license to teach and support for new teachers with well-trained mentors. <br /> <br />Reward perfoi-n;ance wbth a 12 percent salary increase for teachers who achieve National Board <br />Certification and a 10 percem pay hike by 2000 for those who earn a more r/gomus master's degee. The <br />bill would also reward teachers with a $1,000 bonus when their schools exceed ¢ xp¢ctat/ons under the AB C <br />plan, and provide extra pay for extra work, like mentoring, professional developmen?, or added <br />responsibilities. <br /> <br />Keep good teachers in the classroom by raising ~aards for continuing teachint,~ License; tenure and a <br />renewal license, The bill al~o provides the Iarges; salary increases during these critical years, and sets aside <br />a $2,500 bonus in the eight year for teachers who commit to con ~tfixue to teach for an additional five years. <br /> <br />Revamp the tenure process to make it tougher' to ach/eve tenure and make it easi,:r remove ine£fective <br />teachers from the classroom. <br /> <br />In addition, Hunt is pushing to expand North Carolina's early childhood education bF expanding Smart Star~ <br />into all 100 cotmties this year. He is also pushing to boost school safety by putting r~ore sworn law <br />enforcement officers into the most violent and disorderly middle schools and expanding SOS, the after-school <br />chine prevention initiative that matches adult volunteer mentors with at-risk student~., <br /> <br /> <br />
