Box 10626
RALEIGH, NORTH CAROLINA 27605-0626
(919) 833-1923
FAX (919) 829-1192

August 29, 1997

Susie F. Bonds
Clerk to the Board
PO Box 707
Concord, NC 28026-0707

Dear Susie F. Bonds,

For the past few years the Cabarrus County Commissioners have been asked to declare the fourth
Saturday in September as Hunting and Fishing Day in Cabarrus. On behalf of the N.C. Wildlife Federation and
the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission, I am writing to ask that this issue be included on the agenda for the
upcoming Commission mestng so that they might consider issuing a similar proclamation for this year.
The N.C. Wildlife Federation believes that the positive roles of the sporting public should not go
umecogniz~ Sportsmen and women provide revenues to protect and enhance fish and wildlife populations and
to improve the quality of wildllfe habitat. In addition, we think that the strong conservation ex.hie among true
sportsm~ and women should not be ignored but should be shared and that is why we strongly support this year's
theme -- "A Natural Invitiation To Step Outside".
Annually, North Carolina's hunters and anglers contribute over $20 million to the N.C. Wildlife
Resources Commission's conservation program~. These program.~ have benefitted hundreds of wildlife and fish
species, from deer, quail, wild turkey, striped bass and brook trout to otters, bald eagles, alligators and songbirds
-- fish and wildlife that all North Carolinians can enjoy and appreciate.
Enclosed is a sample proclamation for Hunting and Fishing Day, a sample press release, and enough
copies for you to forward to each of your counties' commissioners. I have also included a pre-paid postcard for
you to return and let us know ff your county will be considering discussing the possiblity of recognizing
S~ptember 28th as Hunting and Fishing Day. Thank you for this opportunity to recognize an important piece
of our national and state heritage. If we can be of assistance, please contact Lisa West at (919) 833-1923.

Sincerely,

Chuck Rice, President
North Carolina Wildlife Federation

/lgw
enclosures

CC:

NCWF Regional Vice Presidents
Cabarrus County Commissioners
