and services mixed in. There are a few of
the traditional housing developments, or
subdivisions, but for the most part
residences are rural and scattered. Housing
is both site built and manufactured with very
few mobile homes in what would be
considered a park. However, a new mobile
home park has been approved in the old
Midland area that is planned to contain 55
spaces.

Land use in the area is shaped not only by
the existence and previous dependence on
the rail and the larger road network, but also

by some of the main physical characteristics.
Underlying much of the land is the Carolina
Slate Belt. This is a large rock structure that
runs along the entire eastern side of the
County. The result of this is shallow and
poor soils that are not conducive to septic
systems and produce the scattered housing
pattern and the limited non-residential
development.

The discussion that follows details specific
types of development. Included with this
discussion are some of the issues and
problems related to each category.
