While there are other
nodes of commercial activity, and scattered
businesses, most of these uses are at or near
crossroads. These and most of the scattered
uses offer goods and services for the nearby
population rather than attracting people from
the larger region.

Many and varied goods and services are
offered, although some services are notably
absent. Businesses are almost entirely
owned and operated by local families and
include restaurants, a hardware store, small
grocery/convenience stores, tire and
automotive sales and a furniture shop.
Services that are offered include a funeral
home, feed and seed store, mill, florist,
barber and real estate offices.

Those goods and services that are notably
absent are a grocery chain, drug store,
traditional chain restaurants, and medical or
dental services. However, by early 1998 a
new medical center will be built on US 601
near old Midland. It will contain space for
three doctors, one dentist and a pharmacy.
Some commercial uses, such as a store in
old Midland, have been attempted, but have
not had the necessary population to support
them. There are varied reasons why these
uses are not present but they include a lack
of sewer service and a rural and scattered
population. Those factors will be addressed
through the Plan recommendations.

INDUSTRIAL

The industrial and manufacturing uses,
unlike the commercial, have not historically
served the immediate area.
