Resolution No. 1997- <br /> <br /> A RESOLUTION SUPPORTING THE <br />WIDENING OF INTERSTATE 85 IN CABARRUS COUNTY <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, 1-85 is the major transportation corridor through Cabarrus County; and <br /> <br /> Wl~F~REAS, 1-85 has been widened in Mecklenburg County and work is currently underway <br />to widen 1-85 in Rowan County; and <br /> <br /> Wltl~REAS, the rapid growth and development of residential, commercial and industrial uses <br />in Cabarrus County and its municipalities have greatly increased the traffic on 1-85; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the increased traffic on 1-85 has caused growing concerns about traffic <br />congestion and traffic safety for both motorists traveling through Cabarrus County and local <br />residents; and <br /> <br /> WltEREAS, the construction ofi-485 has been put on an accelerated completion schedule <br />and, when completed, will direct even greater numbers of vehicles onto 1-85; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, Concord Mills, a 1.4 million square foot retail and entertainment project <br />planned for a site located directly offi-85, will be a major regional attraction and generate increased <br />traffic on 1-85; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, an improved 1-85 will have a positive impact on future industry and business <br />developments and expansions in Cabarrus County and its municipalities. <br /> <br /> NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Cabarrus County Board of <br />Commissioners unanimously supports the widening of 1-85 in Cabarrus County and urges the North <br />Carolina Department of Transportation to move forward with the scheduling of additional lanes and <br />safety improvements to this section ofi-85 as quickly as possible. <br /> <br /> BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Board requests that all municipalities in Cabarrus <br />County adopt similar Resolutions supporting the widening of 1-85 in Cabarrus County. <br /> <br /> Adopted this the 17th day of November, 1997. <br /> <br />ATTEST: <br /> <br />Frankie F.
