To: Debbie Brannan

From: GIS Department

Subject: SERUG Conference

Recently the South East Regional Users Group Conference (SERUG) was held in Decatur, GA October 22-
24, 1997. As part of the annual conference activities, a Geographic Information Systems (GIS) poster
contest was held with participants from all over the Southeastern United States. This year, the Cabarrus
County GIS Department was honored with a "Best Display of a Project" award while attending this
conference.

The conference hosted by Environmental Systems Research Institute inc. (ESRI), the world's gl GIS
mapping soft'ware company, drew ESRI users from North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Florida,
Alabama and Tennessee. This allows ESRI to showcase how their software is being used and provides a
forum where users as a group can give feedback and learn what ESRI plans are for the future. For Cabarms
County, the event was a great way to witness, first hand, how the department compares regionally with
other GIS users. This is useful in that it allows the county to gain and share new ideas and come up with
better ways to help both private and public sectors by providing county data in a mapping format.

Of the fifty or so entrants who were entered in a variety of categories, the Cabarrus County poster showed
how GIS played a vital role by presenting county data to attract Corning Telecommunications and fiber
optics company into choosing the Cabarms County area. In this case, GIS was used to inventory, organize,
analyze and present economic development data to attract Coming.

Along with the certificate they won for Best Display, the department also received over $1200 in GIS
software. Also, the winning display is presently being displayed at the ESRI regional office in south
Charlotte.
