LONG SCHOOL <br /> <br />continued: <br /> <br />Need is for passive recreation, walking trails, butterfly garden, herb garden for science <br />classes, particularly low-maintenance areas that would require minimum attention.during the <br />SuE~er. ~ · <br /> <br />Creek needs clearing and stabilizing, for appearance, for use by science classes, and for <br />general enjoyment by students and community. Teachers say stream is "on the verge of <br />disappearing." The slope is unstable. <br /> <br />More community use of facilities is desired, to strengthen ties between school and community, <br />and cut crime. School could be a bridge between adjacent comm%mities of different socio- <br />economic levels. <br /> <br />Walking and fitness areas would serve both. <br /> <br />Teachers would like projects that would involve students in the building process. <br /> <br />High priority should be given to stabilizing the stream, in order to maintain a valuable <br />p~blic asset. A stream management program should be initiated. <br /> <br />Concord Middle School is Cabarrus County's outstanding example of the school-park concept in <br />operation. This should be strengthened by adding passive recreation areas for school and <br />community use. <br /> <br />Nature trails to serve the educat'ional program could be coordinated'with walking trails for <br />the comunity. <br /> <br />Herb and butterfly gardens could be added with student participation. <br /> <br /> <br />
