MARK L. SPEAS
DISTRICT ATTOR NE¥

John Day
Area Manager
65 Church Street
Concord, NC 28025

September 10, 1996

77 UNION STREET
E 0. BOX 70

CONCORD* N C. 28028

Dear John:

This letter will confirm our telephone conversation of September 5, 1996 wherein we
spoke of space requirements for the District Attorney's office. All of my offices are occupied with
one secretary located in an open hallway. On January 1, 1997 a fifth assistant district attorney will
be joining my staff. I do not have any place to put her. Moreover, there is a dist'mct likelihood that
the General Assembly will appropriate funds for a sixth assistant district attorney in the next
session of the Legislature. As you know there is a janitorial area located directly behind my
offices which would be adequate for two or three new offices. Up fitting that area to provide
office space for my staffwould meet for my current needs.

I know that many other agencies compete for county tax dollars and the demands for those
dollars seem to be never ending. However when January l, 1997 arrives unless additional space is
made available I will simply will have no place my new assistant district attorney to sit down.

Please let me know the County's position on this matter as soon as possible.

Sincerely,

Mark L.
