The study commission took
field trips to Asheville and New Bern to inspect ongo-
ing revitalization projects and to hear public comment
about thc importance of prcscrxSng a sense of place.
Pete went home to Maxton and started working on
creating a rcvolving fund and pushing tbr downtown
improvements. Itl the process, hc found an anonymous
donor willing to provide thc fimds nccessa~' to pur-
chase and renovate the Patterson Building as Town
Hall. Thc donor, however, did not want the town to
own thc structure in order to make sure that
political winds didn't undo her gift. So, the gi!¥
been made to Preservation Nnrth Carolina w/~i~ i iii
continue to own and oversee thc building. In ti?x
the building will be leased on a hmg-tcrm basis to
thc town.
Built in 1911 to house tine newly organized
of Robeson, this impressive fiat iron-shaped bnilding is
Maxton's most prominent landmark, goon afl:er .'itc
building was completed the clock tower was com-
structcd with fiands raised t?om.pfivate donati~>
The seeds tbr this transaction were sown
ago.
