COUNTY GOVERNMENT WEEK <br />APRIL 2 - 8, 1995 <br /> <br />PROCLAh&&TION <br /> <br />WHEREAS, counties trace their roots to the E~gli~h shire of a thousand years ago. <br /> <br />WHEREAS, county government structures today are as diverse as the people they represent. <br /> <br />counties provide a wide spectrum of services to their residents, and county employees are proud <br />of the service they provide. <br /> <br />state constitutions legislate the revenue sources counties may pursue to meet their budget <br />requirements and taxes are the primary revenue source for counties. <br /> <br />counties spend more than $140 billion a year in providing environmental protection, social <br />sen, ices, public education, emergency medical services, law enforcement, health services, parks <br />and recreation, water and sewer services and dozens of other services for their dtizeus. <br /> <br />in a recent Gallup poll of U.S. citizen's attitudes toward federal, state and local government, <br />individuals said that local governments gave the most for the money and spent tax dollars most <br />wisely. <br /> <br />it is time for this nation to recogni?e that it is everyone's responsibility to ensure that our <br />children have the opportunity to grow in a nurturing environment to become serf-reliant and <br />productive adults. Children are this country's most valuable resource. <br /> <br />WHEREAS, like our children, America's counties are America's future. <br /> <br />NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Cabarrus County Board of Commissioners does hereby <br />proclaim the week of April 2 - 8, 1995 as <br /> <br />County Government Week in Cabarrus County <br /> <br />and urges all citizens to be more involved in and aware of issues affecting county government. <br /> <br />Adopted this the 20th day of March, 1995. <br /> <br />AWl'EST: <br /> <br />Jeffrey L.
