CABARRUS COUNTY PROGRAM WINS ST&TE AWARD

Cabarrus County's "Managing Growth into the 21st Cenmry...Understanding the
Alternatives for Handling Growth" has won an Outstanding County Program Award from
the North Carolina Association of County Commissioners. The Association sponsors this
award program each year to recognize innovative and cost-effective programs.

The County's program entry was submitted by Mr. Jerry Newton, Planning and
Development Area Manager, and was one of 16 programs statewide to be honored at the
Association's Annual Conference on August 24-27 in Pinehurst. The program won in the
public awareness category. Other categories included general government, human services,
and environment.

The award winning entry detailed the efforts by the Planning, Zoning and Building
Inspections Department to educate the public about the fast growth rate in Cabarrus
County, the potential problems associated with this growth, and options available for
managing growth. Specific projects included the issuance of a 35-page primer on advanced
growth management, publication of a series of articles on growth management in the local
newspaper, distribution of articles on growth management to the public, and participation
in a workshop session to explain growth management alternatives.
