Cabarrus County School Parks

In 1994-95, the Cabarrus County Parks and Recreation
Commission and staff made the following advances in the
Cabarrus County School/Parks process:

An inventory of existing school property and the school
and community recreation facilities at each of the 26
public school campuses in Cabarms County.

Evaluation by the Parks and Recreation Commission
and staff of the school sites for parks and recreation
facilities development in each community, and the po-
tential at each school site.

Comments from school officials and citizens in each
areaofthe county regarding recreation needs and potential
use of each campus for community recreation. These
comments came through public meetings held at each
school by Parks and Recreation Commission members
and staff, as well as informal conversations throughout
the county.

· Review and comments by administrators and principals.

Schematic drawings to reflect potential school/parks
facilities development. These drawings were completed
by a professional consultant, Woolpert Consultants of
Charlotte.

Woolpert Consultants also provided construction cost
estimates for each recreational element at the school/
park sites.

The Cabarrus County Board of Commissioners and the
Cabarrus County Board of Education jointly purchased
58 acres on Weddington Road for a proposed school/
park site. This new school is known as Westside Elemen-
tary School.

In 1995-96, the Cabarrus County Parks and Recreation
Commission has plans to submit a formal report on the
Cabarrus County School/Park Proposal to the Cabarrus
County Board of Commissioners, Kannapolis Board of
Education, and Cabarrus County Board of Education.
