FEB-01-1994 10:37 FROM CAB. CTY. SOC. SERU. TO 7889820 P.02

January 31, 1994

MEMORANDUM

We are seeking approval of the Board of Commissioners at their
meeting on February 7, 1994 to apply for a Children's Justice Act Grant
from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. The grant
proKram is administered by the North Carolina Department of Crime
Control ~-d Public Safety, Governor's Crime Commission Division.

Preliminary applications are due to the Governor's Crime Commission
by February 15, 1994. Successful applicants are requited to submit a
finalized application by April 15, 1994. No match funds are required for
the ~-t since it is 100% federal funding. The K~nt period is for one
year be_~tnni~E in September 1994.

The purpose of the ~ant is to establish an interdisciplinary
approach to the investigation and prosecution of Child sexual abuse
cases. The Kr~nt also provides for multidisiplt~svy trs~ing for
co_mmunity professionals/agencies to assure the most recent knowledge in
the field of child sexual abuse.

An interdisciplinary approach to child sexual abuse is beneficial as
the trauma experienced by child victims is lessened. A child would reveal
information only one time as opposed to the current system of providing
tnffoz-u~ation up tO five times. Information shat-inK among eommullity
a~encies is enhanced as duplication of community resources is decreased.
Also, case decision rn~Id~E would occur in a more timely n~nner as a
co_mmunity t~m would work tol~ther for qulak case resolution.

jfm

Ths_~k you for your consideration of this request.

Deparin~nt of SoCial Services
P.O. Box 668 · C~3ncofd. NC 250-26-/)~8 * (7(M) 786-7141
