problems and opportunities and develop a regional framework to
address issues of regional concern. In this manner, priorities and
solutions can be developed irrespective of corporate, county, or
State boundaries and which can later be implemented at the local
level. The primary goal of the OUR REGION TOMORROWStudy is
to develop strategies and policies which recognize future growth
and development trends but strive to maintain and enhance the
area's quality of life.

How will the Study be conducted?

The Studywill be conducted in a strategic planning format. Initially,
municipal and county governing boards will be asked to make
appointments to a Future Visions Committee (FVC). This Commit-
tcc will be in charge of overseeing the project and identifying the
most important or significant areas of concern upon which the
Study is to focus. Areas of study which the Committee could select
include, for example, recreation, transportation, public safety,
tourism, the environment, etc.

Given the large number of communities to be included in this study,
the FVC will contain a large number of representatives. Countiea,
depending on their population, will each have 2-4 representatives.
Cities with a population of 15,000+ persons will have at least one
representative on the FVC. Cities with smaller populationswill have
shared representation. Elected officials and local citizens may be
able to serve on the FVC.

A Task Force will be assembled for each area of concern chosen by
the FVC. The Task Force will eventually develop a report and set
of recommendations to be reviewed by the FVC and then submitted
for approval to the various local governments in the region. The
process for making appointments to the task forces will be similar
to that used for creating the FVC.

Prior to the FVC developing t.he list of issues to be stud~ad, they w~ll
be reviewing a Regional Atlas. The Atlas, prepared by Dr. Alfred
Stuart of UNC-Charlotte specifically for this project, will provide an
overview and analysis of the region's socio-economic and demo-
graphic trends.
