H. PARKS HELMS
CHAIRMAN

July 5, 1994

The Honorable Jeff Barnhart
Chairman, Board of County Commissioners
Post Office Box 707
-Concord, NC 28025

Dear Mr. Barnhart:

On Saturday, July 2, 1994, Mecklenburg County experienced an
emergency disaster when USAir flight 1016 crashed while
attempting to land at Charlotte-Douglas International Airport.

Due to the fact that Mecklenburg County was unable to respond
to this disaster alone, a mutual aid response was requested
from neighboring counties.

I would like to take this opportunity to extend to you my
sincere appreciation for the support and involvement of the
resources your county provided to us in our hour of need. In
particular I wish to extend my thanks to the individuals from
your community whose unselfish service in this critical
incident permitted rapid care and transportation of the
survivors and support of the on-going emergency needs in
Charlotte and Mecklenburg County during the course of this
disaster situation.

I'm sure the families and friends of those who were killed or
injured in this tragedy join with me in expressing 'our
heartfelt gratitude for your unselfish and heroic efforts
during their time of need. Thank you!

Please extend my praise to the many individuals and
organizations that participated. It is good to know that we
have neighbors we can depend on.

Chairman
