NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF COUNTIES

1994 NACo Achievement Award

The "JOBS FOR DADS" Program administered by the Cabarrus County Department of
Social Services was awarded a 1994 NACo Achievement Award during the NACo Annual
Conference held in Clark County, Nevada on July 31 - August 4.

The "JOBS FOR DADS" Program is designed to give unemployed absent-parent fathers who
have child support obligations (often called "Dead beat Dads") the ability to become self-
supporting, thus enabling them to pay child support and assume their responsibility as
parents. This is accomplished through education, training, and job development and
placement.

The success of this program has brought awards to Cabarrus County from two statewide
organizations. An Outstanding County Program Award from the N. C. Association of
County Commissioners was presented at the annual conference in August, 1993, and a
Governor's Award for Excellence was presented at the N.C. Employment, Education, and
Training Conference on October 21, 1993.

James H. Polk, Jr., Social Work Supervisor, submitted the Application for the NACo
Achievement Award. Social Workers Fran Carpenter, Jane Cauthen and Ron Blackmon
plan to be present at the Board of Commissioners meeting on October 3 to accept the
award.
