This is being done so that the new sewer lines in this
southern section of the County Qill be sufficiently sized thus
avoiding a future parallel sewer line. It has also been pursued so
that we would generate a "buy-in" to the system at a cost of $500
per acre or lot, whichever is greater. One-half of this is
retained by the County, thereby reducing the overall cost of the
system to the County. While nearly every large property owner has
had strong interest in the project, no one is at a point of
commitment. Using a force main, we will be very limited in the
taps that will occur. The main stumbling block with the property
owners is the possibility of water lines for the area. With the
widening of NC 24/27 out from Mecklenburg County and a land use
plan detailing future development of the area, the property owners
won't commit into the sewer project without knowing the potential
for water also in the area. If water does become available, the
sewer line will be undersized.

When the County Commissioners accepted the N.C. Commerce Finance
Center's grant of $216,247 in April we had already been working on
upsizing the sewer line and trying to secure funds for waterline
extensions into the same area. We found out late in the CDBG
application process that there was a water contamination problem
very near the Howell Center. RAM Leather, a Mecklenburg County
