HOW WILL THE BOND FUNDS BE SPENT?

The General Assembly must approve how funds will be spent based
on recommendations made by the Department of Environment, Health
and Natural Resources. Every effort will be made to do at least
one project in every North Carolina state park. Some of the
projects recommended include:

State Park Development and Renovation Projects:

15 new visitor centers and indoor public-use facilities.

8 state parks with new picnic shelters and/or picnic areas.
13 new roa4 and parking lot projects.

3 new campgrounds (one for equestrian users) and 1
campground renovation.

6 state parks will have new water/sewer projects funded and
5 state parks will receive improvements to their systems.

All new facilities will be accessible to persons with
disabilities, and the majority of Mount Mitchell's existing
facilities will be made accessible. ~

1 new and 1 renovation project to improve boating access.

Many new and existing trails will be worked oh across the
state using volunteer labor, youth enrichment program labor,
prisoners and park staff.

State park education/interpretive exhibits will be
renovated.

* 1 improvement project for equestrian access.

Land Acquisition:

Land values are increasing at a steady rate. Delays in
securing park land today mean greater expense tomorrow - if
the needed sites are still available. Lands within and
surrounding state park boundaries are needed to fully
protect the biological treasures and scenic landscapes that
the parks were established to preserve. Many sensitive
natural areas of statewide and national significance are not
currently protected in and around existing parks.
