The need fo~ additional peesonnel has become critical at the

A. Cannon Memorial L~bra?¥, Ka~napolfs Branch. Az you w~11 note from the
following c~art and the attached graph, c~rculation (the number of ~ater~als
--books, audio cassettes, records, vldeocassettes, filmstrips, e~c,--
checked out from the ltbrary) has shown a constant ~n¢~ease over the past
seven years. The [992 total of [$t,S[Z 1tams ~s a [08~ increase over the
2986 iota3 of 7~,714 items. The number Of people on the library staff,
however~ hat ~ot changed ~n that same seven-year per~od, eemalntng constant
at seven fu33 time and t~o part t~e

~[RCULAT~O~.

[986 72,714
[987 83,976
198~ 99,497

1990 113,423
199~ 157.aZ2

The number of ~atet~als cheCke~ out from a library affects all aspects
of the library's operation. Thus, this-inCrease ~n circulation also means
a corresponding l~crease in the number of people v~sittng the
the number of ~tems returned to the library, the number of ovee~ue 1tams
and the number of items whtch ~ust be returned to the shelves. Qur
problem aeeas fo~ hand~ing the work loa~ are at the Circulation Desk
(checking cut and check~ng ~n materials) and with ~eturntng materials to
their p~ope~ places on the she~ves. ~t ts virtually impossible for the
library staff to keep up with the demands of a steadily increasing
work load while at the same time assisting patrons in a cheerful and
efficient man,er.

The ltbra?y staff has always taken great pride in the work we do, not
only in the number of things we are able to accomplish, but also in the
qual(ty we bring to the work we do. Our main goat has always been and wilt
