QUALITY OF LIFE

The quality of life issues are the most general of the comments and concerns brought out in the process. They
ranged from preservation of rural character to the need for cultural opportunities in the Western Area.
Many of the quality of life issues relate to the environment and thus are interrelated with the land use,
utility and transportation issues. Residents would like to see all new development done in a manner that
preserves the character of the area. This may be done by retaining trees, complying with environmental
regulations and by preservatio~ of important historical properties and sites.

Quarries were also the subject of many of the quality of life concerns. It is important to residents and
businesses that quarries be operated properly and that the land is reclaimed when the quarrying is
completed. Participants also applauded those operations that were well screened, reinfordng the need for
regulations requiring screening and buffering.

Sta-ong feelings about government were also voiced in meetings and the questionnaire. Many people seem to
feel that the average citizen has no voice in government, and that all too often business and industry sway
decisions that affect the area. There was also some complaint about annexation and the need for consistency
between the regulations of city and county government.

WESTERN AREA PLAN DRAFT 4 PAGE 10
