Lo~on, Sec~ta~ <br /> November 29, 1990 <br /> <br /> Dear Friend: <br /> <br /> The third Monday of January of each year has been set aside <br /> by both the state and federal governments as a legal holiday to <br /> honor the birthday of Martin Luther King, Jr. Some local <br /> governments have also established this date as a holiday. <br /> I We believe it is appropriate that the state work to plan, <br /> promote and assist statewide and local efforts directed toward <br /> <br /> i observance of this important national holiday. <br /> The governor of the state of North Carolina has charged us, <br /> the Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday Commission, with the following <br /> I duties: 1) to encourage appropriate ceremonies and activities <br /> t~=oughout the state relating to the observance of the legal <br /> holiday honoring Martin Luther King, Jr.'s birthday; 2) to provide <br /> i advice and assistance to local governments and private organi- <br /> zations across the state with respect to the observance of such <br /> holiday; and 3) to work to promote among the citizens of North <br /> Carolina an awareness of the life and work of Martin Luther King, Jr. <br /> <br /> The commission will assist you in publicizing your Martin <br /> Luther King celebrations~activities if you submit the information <br /> I on these activities to us no later than January 8, 1991.
