Lo~on, Sec~ta~ November 29, 1990 Dear Friend: The third Monday of January of each year has been set aside by both the state and federal governments as a legal holiday to honor the birthday of Martin Luther King, Jr. Some local governments have also established this date as a holiday. I We believe it is appropriate that the state work to plan, promote and assist statewide and local efforts directed toward i observance of this important national holiday. The governor of the state of North Carolina has charged us, the Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday Commission, with the following I duties: 1) to encourage appropriate ceremonies and activities t~=oughout the state relating to the observance of the legal holiday honoring Martin Luther King, Jr.'s birthday; 2) to provide i advice and assistance to local governments and private organi- zations across the state with respect to the observance of such holiday; and 3) to work to promote among the citizens of North Carolina an awareness of the life and work of Martin Luther King, Jr. The commission will assist you in publicizing your Martin Luther King celebrations~activities if you submit the information I on these activities to us no later than January 8, 1991.
