UNC CHARLOTTE'S MISSION

- We are currently a "co~flrehensive" institution and seek to
be designated a "research" institution by redefining our
mission. The Board of C~arnors ia responsible for
determining the mission of each of the 16 campuses
of The University of Worth Carolina.

- Without the "research" designation and the furtherance
of doctoral program~ hera, our region's people and
industries will be educationally short-changed.

- We are already:

1. at the bo%tom of state dollars per student

2. at the bottom of academic space available per student

3. at the bottom of librar~ space student
per

- When compared to other similar regions around the U.S.,
we are the largest Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA)
which does not have at least one institution offering
doctorate work.

- A recent study by The Urban Land Institute for the Carolinas
~arternehip, Inc. highlighted the needs of our region and
stated that the educational focus shoula include an
emphasis on The University of North Carolina at Charlotte
with agressiva steps to upgrade fha institution into a
major urban university with expanded research, technical,
professional and doctoral programs.

To answer our region's needs we must move forward to establish a new
MISSION which speaks to these needs. We must implement:

- programs at the doctoral level

- the extensiom of the ca~rpus into the region

- professional programs, research, and public service
programs to respond to the needs of our region's people
and industries.

A university-wide review of assigned missions is underway. The results
will be with our region well into the next century. Regional
support for the revision of [;NC Charlotte's mission is critical.
