iAGRICULTURAL
EXTENSION North Carolina State University
SERVICE College of Agric.lture and Life Sciences

Address reply to:
County Extension Office

P.O. Box 387 Phone: 704/733-6130
Concord, North Carolina 28026-0387

February 6, 1990

Mr. Michael M. Ruffin
Cabarrus County Manager
P.O. Box 707
Concord, North Carolina 28026-0707

Dear Mike:

The Expanded Foods and Nutrition Educational Program (EFNEP) is
a federally funded program that has been in operation in Cabarrus County
for about 18 years. We presently have three (3) EFNEP aides who are
employed on an 80% basis. There has been a reduction in federal funds
for this program. We have been advised by Dr. Elizabeth Meldau, District
Extension Director, NC State University, that the EFNEP Program will
be phased out in Cabarrus County. Two (2) of the EFNEP aides, Mrs.
Joan Goodman and Ms. Frankie Eemphill, will be phased out on
February 28, 1990. Mrs. Vyola Vanderburg, who is working with EFNEP
youth, will be phased out on October 1, 1990.

Approximately 50% of the EFNEP positions in the southwest district
are being phased out along with Cabarrus County.

These EFNEP aides in Cabarrus County have been utilizing the Break
Room as an office, and have been spending most of their time in the
county teaching foods and nutrition to low-income youth.

It is with regret that we are finding it necessary to phase out
this program. Some of them may look for employment with Social Services
or other departments since we have been networking very closely with
other departments. You will find them excellent employees if you decide
to utilize them in some other department.

If we can furnish any information, we will be happy to do so.
Sincerely yours,

County Extension Director

AMS/ccb

cc: Dr. Elizabeth Meldau
