WILLIAM G. HAMBY, Jr.
ATTORNEY AT LAW

July 13, 1990

Ms. SUsie Small
Clerk to the Board
of Commissioners
Post Office Box 707
Concord, North. Carolina .28025

Re: Bicentennial Commission

Dear Susie:

.. Please place this item on the agenda for our next County
Commission meeuing.

Our Bicentennial Commission has met and begun preparing a
program of celebrations for the Cabarrus County Bicentennial,
which will be observed in 1992. The County Commissioners
appointed five initial members of the Bicentennial Commission,
and asked me to serve as a member and the convenor of the initial
meetings as the representative of the County Commissioners.

We have met on several occasions and selected Helen Arthur
and Judge Clarence E. Horton, Jr. as the co-chairs of the
Bicentennial Commission. We have already begun a tentative
schedule of,activities to commemorate our extraordinary history,
from the earliest days of native Americans and the German
settlers to our present day as part of a major American
metropolitan area.

Our Commission has unfort~nately lost two members. Mr.
Jimmy Auten is unable to serve because of scheduling conflicts,
and Mrs. Virginia Marzean has resigned because of other personal
concerns.

We have already gained community interest in our program,
and we would like the opportunity to invite others who have
expressed a strong interest in our projects to join us on the
Bicentennial Commission. For that reason we ask that you appoint
the following persons as official members of the Bicentennial
Commission. In addition, please feel free to appoint such
additional persons you know who would like to help us.

It is our hope that by the time the Bicentennial is over, we
will have had the help of hundreds of county citizens in
celebrating our heritage.. Moreover, we hope that we can reach
many thousands with our activities and educational projects.

lO
