HUla'rING and FISHING DAY
Saturday, September 22, 1990

Hunting and fishing have always been an important par~ of the American tradition.
While these activities may no longer be necessa~ for survival-as in colonial times-they
are still relevant today.

For over 100 years, sportsmen have been in the forefront of the conservation
movement. Not content with merely vocali;,ing their support, hunters and fishermen
requested special fees and taxes on their equipment which help pay for wildlife
management and other conservation programs. Over the years, monies raised totaled
over $8 billion for conservation.

These sportsmen-financed programs have led to the dramatic comeback of many
species such as white-tailed deer, elk, antelope and wild turkey and have benefited all
wildlife.

As individuals and through their organizations, hunters and fishermen volunteer
countless hours of their time for local conservation projects and to raise funds for
conservation.

I would like to take this opportunity to commend hunte, r~ and fishermen for their
efforts on behalf of wildlife and their contributions to conservation.

Therefore, I, James W. Lent~ Chairman of the Cabarrus County Board of
Commissioners, do proclaim Saturday, September 22, 1990, as "Hunting and Fishing Day
in Cabarrns County," and call upon all citizens to join with sportsmen-conservationists in
their efforts to ensure the wise use and proper management of our natural resources to
benefit future generations.

This the 4th day of September, 1990.

James W. Lentz
Chairman, Cabarrns County
Board of Commissioners
