CAMP DRESSER & McKEE
Dr. William F. Pilkington
July 27, 1990
page 3

We feel that the most cost effective means of controlling thc methane migration
problems at thc Cabarrus County Landfill is to install a methane gas cut-off vent
trench along thc areas showt~ in the accompanying map. A typical design cross-
section of this type of U'ench is shown in Exhibit A. For the trench to be effective,
it must go below thc low seasonal water table. A PVC or HDPE sidewall curtain
is used to prevent gas migration to the outside of the trenched area.

If thc County concurs with this recommendation, it is recommended that plans and
specifications for thc trench be developed and thc project be competitively bid out.
If you have any questions or need any additional information, please do not hesitate
to call mc.

Camp Dresser & McKee appreciates this oppo~unity to assist Cabarms County with
your solid waste management program.

Very truly yours,

CAMP DRESSER & McKEE

Joseph F. Wiseman, Jr., P.E.

JFW/tas

Enclosures
