August 29, igg0

Chairman Jim Lentz
Cabarrus County

Dear Jim:

By copy of this letter I have had Mike Rufffln put the
proposed County Airport on the agenda for our next meeting.
Shortly after I came on the board I made the comment to you
that this airport issue was going to tear this board apart.
That was after two commissioners tried to strike a deal on
the airport land without discussion by the board as a whole.
You disagreed at the time with my concern. Since then !
have watched the division grow wider and other people use
this issue to drive dissention within the ranks deeper. The
airport in my opinion has overshadowed to many other things
in this county and has contributed to Cabarrus getting a bad
reputation in other parts of the state. ! don't think it is
anywhere close to being worth the trouble it has caused.

I am not opposed to the County having an airport. ! am
opposed to the expense of the Poplar Tent site. ! think
there are better uses for the land. It is not a top
priority and the voters need to have input on an issue that
is so controversial and costly.

I have given this issue a lot of deep thought before
deciding to write this letter. The purpose of this letter
is to let you know that I will support what the people cf
this county want. I intend to introduce a motiDn to have
million dollars in bonds put on the November ballot for the
construction of an airport at Poplar Tent. I will abide by
that vote.

Considering the majority of the candidates are opposed %o
the airport at Poplar Tent it will probably be dropped this
fall anyway. Ky position on this issue has the most to
loose by this motion. I don't think any of us should try to
force what we believe on the ma3ority, including myself.
believe the ma3ority are opposed to it and that is why !
have steadfastly opposed it. It is obvious from this spring
that the press and business community want to make it the
single issue in the campaign. There is a lot to be lost by
everyone if that happens.

! have attached two items that early on contributed to me
takins the position ! have. One is an article from Carley
Capital group, the developers of University City, urging the
com~ission not to loo~e this quality development land to an
airport. The other is an article from the Observer in which
N.C. Department of Comme_rce'~ Industrial Recruitment
Director Alvah Vard said that" Strictly from an industrial
recruitment standpoint, where you have an airport like
