STATE OF NORTH CAROLINA ~ ~,~¢)~'~
DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION ·

P. O. BOX 25201
RALEIGH 27811-5201

JAMES G. MARTIN JAMES E. HARRINGTON
GOVERNOR March 27, 1989 SECRETARY

MEMOPJ%NDUM TO: County Managers

FROM: James E. Harrington

SUBJECT: Public Meetings to Update Transportation
Improvement Program

Governor Martin, the Board of Transportation and I invite you to
participate in a public meeting to update our Transportation
Improvement Program (TIP). A series of 15 public meetings has
been scheduled across the state to get your advice on highway
improvements in your area. Your comments will be carefully
considered by the board during it~ update of the TIP. We need you
at the meetings to obtain an accurate assessment of the needs and
priorities in your area.

The TIP process has evolved from a "wish list" to a dependable
program of transportation improvements. Last year we started over
94 percent of the highway projects that were scheduled.

I believe the TIP format is the best way to schedule
transportation improvements. In addition to road improvements, we
welcome your ideas on aviation, public transportation, rail and
bicycle projects. Your assistance is important if we are to
continue the accuracy and dependability of our transportation
planning process.

If it is inconvenient for you to attend the meeting in your area,
you may want to join other area 6ffiCials in presenting a combined
priority list of projects for the Board of Transportation to
consider. Your recommendations, in priority, should be sent to
Mr. George E. Wells, State Highway Administrator, N.C. Department
of Transportation, P.O. Box 25201, Raleigh, N.C. 27611.

JEH/ala

Attachment
