GALE ^, KIRK
~3~ ~ Cnw Road
Shelb% H. £. 28150

July 26, 1989 ~
Cabarrus County Commissioners ~ ~"~" ....
Concord, NC 28025
Dear Commissioners,

As a former resident of Cabarrus Oounty, who lived there most of
my life and who moved to Shelby 2 1/2 years ago due to my
husbands promotion to the home office, ! would like to voice an
opinion.

Long before we moved, i't was very apparant that traffic on
Mighway 49 from Jackson Trainig School to UNC-Charlotte could, at
times be a very busy road. It is even more apparant now that 49
is being developed in Harrisburg and Mecklenburg. As President of
the Association ~or Retarded Citizens/North Carolina, I travel
along the route to Raleigh a mininum of once a month. Recently on
on such a trip, I stopped, both that morning and evening, at the
Say-A-Then to put gas in my car. During the one to one and a half
minutes it took to fill the car up I counted 66 (morning) cars
and 83 (evening) cars who were 'nose to tail'. I am very serious~
~nose-to-tail' and barely moving~ Thank goodness I was going in
the opposite direction both times~

When the state bought the rights to build Mighway 49, enough land
was bought to make it a four lane highway. Ny point is this: I am
suggesting that Caba~rus County look to it:s future growth and
have the state expand 49 to four lanes from the county line to,
at least, the intersection at Zion Church Road or we will be
encountering the same pitfalls with traffic that other cities are
currently experiencing, traffic jams on our major fareways[.

Another area for you to take serious consideration of is Righway
29, which in the last five years has been compared to
Independence Boulevard[ Improvements along Righway 29 from 1-85
to the hospital has helped, but it can still be a traffic jam on
some days. I know, I've been caught there once or twice [n the
last two to three months.

You, as leaders, should be looking at that future growth and how
it is affecting Cabarrus now and in the very near future.
Cabarrus is -l~-experiencing tremendous growth and overflow from
Mecklenburg and should take steps, NOW, to make it orderly.

I hope you will seriously consider my opinions. Some day I hope
to move back. I want to continue to feel that Cabarrus is the
best place to live in North Carolina[ Please, don't let us get
caught in the disorderly patterns of other citiesl

Sincerely
