The department <br /> strives to meet these needs in two major areas= facilities and programs~ i Facilities <br /> are developed both by the county and with other community organizations t~rough <br /> a matching grants program. Programs are developed to meet the needs that are <br /> not being aerPed by other local agonciee~ public or private. Needs are identified <br /> through contact with various individuala and groups in the community, surveys, <br /> and recent trends within the leisure service f~eld itself. The department~ has <br /> attempted to develop a well-balanced arts program for citizens of all ages with <br /> both visual and performing arts. The staff of the department, along with various <br /> part-time staff, volunteera,~-and partfcipanta~ meet to evaluate and upgrade these <br /> services. Ail Cabarrus County agencies are governed by the local government fiscal centre <br /> <br /> 5, Community Involvement Please describe your organizaliods of(otis to actively involve traditionally <br /> underserved audiences (racial and elbnic minorhies, senior cili~ns, disabled <br /> persons, institutionalized persons, economically disadvamaged~persoos and <br /> geographically isolated persons) in Ihe following areas: board a'~d staff <br /> <br /> communications (publications, publici~ etc.). <br /> <br /> Cabarrua Youth Theatre ia open to all Cabarrua County youths ages 6-18. <br /> Auditions are held for each production; cuts are made only if the number of persons <br /> auditioned exceeds the number of parts available. In these casea where cuts are <br /> made, every effort is made to incorporate those persons by creating additional roles <br /> where possible, or offering the opportunity to bo involved in technical theatre as a <br /> volunteer staff person. <br /> <br /> Complimentary tickets have been distributed to a nue~er of rest homes for the <br /> elderly aa well aa group homes'for the mentally and physically handicapped. The <br /> theatre staff works closely with these agencies to meet special needs with regard <br /> to special aeattng areas for wheelchairs and seata up front for visually and <br /> hearing impaired. Ail communications for the theatre are handled by the Special <br /> Programs Supervisor. <br /> <br /> 6. Program Description Pleasegivea briefdescripdon oiHmcommunity program forwhlclryouare <br /> <br /> The Cabarrus Youth Theatre is a non-profit theatre program administered by the <br /> Cabarrus County Parks and Recreation Department. Thc theatre ia designed to provide <br /> the youth of Cabarrus County with an opportunity to explore and enhance their talents <br /> in the disciplines of muaio, drama, dance, and technical theatre. Founded in 1972 <br /> by a group of interested community volunteers, the program serves approximately 2500 <br /> performers, volunteers, and spectators each year. The theatre normally contracts a <br /> staff of 5-8 artists aa technical aupport personnel. Plans for fiscal year 1988-89 <br /> include two musical productions to involve youths aged 6-18. <br /> <br /> The Cabarrua Youth Theatre won the Class II Arts and Humanities Award for 1987 <br /> given by the North Carolina Recreation and Parks Society and was nominated for tho <br /> regional arts and humanities award from the National Recreation and Park Association <br /> in early 1988. <br /> <br /> <br />
