J:'JL 2 .~

North Carolina Department of Cultural Resources

James G. Martin, Governor Division of Archives and History
Pattie Dorset; Secretary William S. Price, Jr., Director

July 22, 1~87

Gary D. Logston, AICP
Senior Aviation Specialist
Wilbur Smith and Associates
P. O. Box 92
Coltunbia, S.C, 29202-0092

Re: Cabarrus County Airport, CH 87-E-0000-0862

Dear Hr..Logston:

Thank you for providing additional info~mation concerning the above
pro, act.

Based on the photographs and information submitced, we are of the opinion
that the Reverend John R. Robinson House does not appear eligible for
listing in the National Register of Historic Places due to its excessive
deterioration. We have further determined, using the information
available, that the Brumley Log House is probably not individually
eligible for the Register because of early twentieth century changes
made to the o~iginal Federal style interior. We are also sorry to hear
that the First Julius Shakespeare Harris Houae burned during the winter
of 1986, but we appreciate the information and will update our maps and
files accordingly.

This office agrees that Favoni, the only property within the project
area which is currently listed in the National Register, needs extensive
work. However, it is our understanding that the Historic Preservation
Foundation of North Carolina is in the proceas of acquiring this "most
significant endangered property in Cabarrus County" and bas plans to
ensure its preservation and reuse.

taring reviewed the location of the proposed airport at the Poplar Tent
site, this office is of the opinion that the proposed undertaking will
have no effect upon the Poplar Tent Presbyterian Church and former
manse, both of which are on the state Study List for future nomination
to the National Register of Historic Places. However, the effect of the
proposed undertaking on Favoni could possibly be adverse. In order for
our office and the. Federal Aviation Administration to determine whether
or not the effect on this National Register property will be adverse, we
will need further information and maps, including:

109 East Jones Street · Raleigh, North Carolina 27611
