Q DEPARTMENT OF THE ARMY
WILMINGTON DISTRICT, CORPS OF ENGINEERS
October 15, 1987
Planning Division

Mr. Charles D. McGinnis
County Manager
Cabarrus County
Courthouse, Box 707
__ Concord, North Carolina 28025

Dear Mr. McGinnis:

A report on water supply alternatives for the Rocky River basin is
enclosed. The report was prepared to assist State, local, and municipal
officials in evaluating the water suppiy needs of the basin and developing
plans to meet those needs.

As discussed in the report, a Corps of Engineers study was recently
concluded which examined a range of water resources needs in the basin.
These needs included flood control, recreation, and hydropower, as well
as water supply. During this study, a definite need for development of
additional water supply in the future was identified. However, under
current policy, there is no Federal interest in developing reservoirs
or other measures solely for water supply, and the report recommends that
no Federal action be taken. Therefore, further study and development of
water supply resources in the Rocky River basin will be the responsibility
of non-Federal interests.

The information furnished is preliminary, and no definite eonc~usions
can be drawn as to which measure offers the best option for meeting future
water supply needs. Nowsver~ we hope the report will be useful to you and
others with an interest in planning for the water supply needs of the
Rocky River basin. If you have questions concerning this report, please
contact Mr. Doug Greene of my office at telephone number (919) 343-4533
or (FTS) 671-4533.

Chief, Planning Division

Enclosure (3 copies)
