CABARRUS COUNTY
Department o[ ocia ervices

~oncord, ~orth Uamlina 2802fl-0¢~8

Telephone: {~04) 780-7141 ~ames ~. Cook, dr.
Di~eeto~

November 12, 1987

TO: Charles McGinnis, County Manager {~.~
FROM: James F. Cook, .Ir., SoCial Services Directo

Cabar~ua County Department of Social Services is requesting
permission of the County Commissioners to apply for and accept a federal
grant for $38,000 offered by our state department for an Independent
Living Project for foster children. This grant is 100% federal funds
with no matching funds required and would begin as soon as selection
occurs and terminate September 30, 1988.

If we are one of the ten counties selected, we plan to hire a
temporary Social Worker I as one of the budgeted items in the grant
request. The purpose of tbis grant is to conduct demonstration projects
which offer training, counseling, and supportive services to prepare
those adolescents in foster care age sixteen and over for independent
living once they leave foster care. This certainly can have a positive
influence in our community by having a better prepared and productive
adult.

We would appreciate your putting this on the agenda as soon as
possible. Thank you.
