PROGRA~ DISCRIPTION
Uwharrie Group Home

The Uwharrie Group Rome is designed to provide short-term residential treatment
for boys between the ages of 10 and 18. The group home is staffed by full-time
Resident Counselors who rotate on a weekly basis. Two Resident Counselors are
on duty. Additional staff include and Executive Director who handles admissions
and administrative matters, and a part-time Secretary.

The structured living component of the program includes a behavior modification
point system, and a full but flexible schedule of daily activities. Each boy
earns points on a daily basis by acting appropriately, following instructions,
doing assigned chores, and participating in school activities or the summer
program. Privileges such as outside hours, allowance, later bed time, watching
television and extra snack are earned with the points accumulated on a weekly
basis. The boys also work their way through the program by earning a specific
number of points each week. A boy can graduate the program after earning 25
successful weeks. Inappropriate behaviors are handled by loss of points, short
periods of time out, loss of provileges and logical and natural consequences.
The boys have a busy daily schedule, but there are some periods of free time
available each day. The suuuner program provides recreational and educational
experiences for the boys.

During the school year each boy is required to be in public school. Each boy
takes a.point sheet to. school which his.teachers-:fill-out.~ This poin~s~eet. ~:?~..
indicates~wheChe~_:the:.chiSdturns~in his work, behav~s_app~op£~r-e-l~_has_.an'
appropriate attitude, and. gets to class on' time. Tutoring is provided t~ice each week at the
Group Home bY a teacher who is experienced working vith exceptional-children.

Group counseling is provided once each ~eek to the residents of the Group Rome.
If a particular boy needs individual counseling, it is contracted for with the
Piedmont Area Hental Health Centers. The families of all of the boys in
residence at the Group Home are referred for family counseling at the Mental
Health Center or a private psychologist. Frequent home visits are a part of
the program. In addition, the resident counselors at the Group Home meet with
the parents to determin how each boy has behaved during the weekend visits.
Suggestions are made to parents regarding problems that ahve arisen during
weekend visits.

Evaluation meetings are held at least once every three months during the period
chat a child is in the Group Home. These evaluaton meetings include staff
at U~harrie Homes, the parents, and representatives from other agencies ~ho
are working with the child. The reasons for these evaluation visits are to
evaluate the progress of each child, and to coordinate the efforts of everyone
involved to help the child achieve his individual goals.
