I

STATE OF NORTH CAROLINA

HAZARDOUS WASTE TREATMENT COMMISSION

Charles D. HcGinnis
County Hanager of Cabarrus County
Courthouse, Box 707
Concord, North Carolina 28025

Dear Hr. HcGinnis:

The Horth Carolina Hazardous Waste Treatment Commission is in the process
of selecting several sites in North Carolina for the construction of an
integrated hazardous waste treatment facility. This facility(les) will not
include a landfill and it will not accept any radioactive or PCB waste
materials. I am enclosing a copy of the Commission's July progress report
to the N.C. General Assembly which describes both the facility and the siting
study.

The first phase of the siting study has been completed using the
guidelines listed on page 5 of the Progress Report. After applying these
guidelines, your county, or parts thereof, are still under consideration
as a possible site for these facilities (map on Page 6). Additional
guidelines and criteria will be adopted and used by the Commission over the
next few months to narrow down the number of potentially acceptable sites
in the State.

! ~ll keep you fully informed as the siting study progresses. Should
you have any questions or desire further information, do not hesitate to
contact Hr. Tom Karnoski of the Commission staff at (919) 733-5&20.

Deborah Parker
Chairperson

TCK:Jdw

Enclosure
