These guidelines reduce the total number of potential sites to a more <br />manageable level, demonstrate the Con~nission's interest regarding safe trans- <br />portation of hazardous waste to any proposed facility, and acknowledge the <br />need to protect certain resources from encroachment by industrial activities <br />such as the facility proposed. The Conmnission has established the following <br />siting guidelines: <br /> <br /> 1. Initial State screening shall focus only on properties that lie <br /> within 25 miles of the Interstate Highway System (I-26, existing <br /> and proposed 1-40, 1-85, I-gS, and 1-77) <br /> <br /> 2. The f~cility shall not be located in or on the following: <br /> <br /> a. Wetlands <br /> b. Existing State parks and forests <br /> c. Existing Federal parks and forests <br /> d. Existing historic sites <br /> e. Existing wildlife refuges <br /> f. Indian reservations <br /> g. ~.
