i! ,
JOHN P. EAST

~MED ~ERVICESo

~. WssMngton, D.C. 20610 ~"

The Honorable Charles D. McGinnis
County Manager
Cabarrus CoUnty
P.O. BOX 707
Concord, NOrth Carolina 28025

Dear Mr. McGinnis:

Thank you for sending me a copy of your resolution regarding
the North Carolina textile industry. I share your concern about
this matter.

Your resolution on the import situation facing North Carolina
textile manufacturers is fully understood. Although there are some
encouraging signs, your worry over the textile situation is not
alone. Nany textile, business, and community leaders with whom I
have met are concerned about this situation as well.

Over 210,000 North Carolinians find employment in the textile
industry. These jobs and many others associated with the industry
are at stake should the trend in higher imports continue its threat
to the industry. In terms of payroll, textiles are the major em-
ployer in North Carolina.

The situation we face is difficult. It is the result of many
adverse forces at work in the marketplace. Efforts in the last
Congress calling for stricter enforcement of import quotas and clear-
er product marking for country of origin should help, but this is
not all Congress can do. You may be assured that I shall press to
see the situation given every consideration in the new year.

A healthy domestic textile industry is a goal to which I am
committed. The importance of the industry and its direct affect on
so many other areas in the State's economy cannot be understated.

Again, thank you for giving me your strong position on this
issue. It's good to know I can count on your support of my efforts
to mitigate the problems facing domestic textiles.

With best regards, I am

Sincerely,

~ohn P. East
United States Senator

JPE:rjt
